A destitute immigrant worker steals an envelope containing instructions for a mysterious job that could pay out a fortune. Following the instructions, the young man unwittingly becomes trapped in a dark and dangerous situation.

The film won the World Cinema Jury Prize at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival. It also won two awards at the 62nd Venice Film Festival.

Finally they are here ! The “Serbian Cultural Center Saint Sava” welcomes the fabulous Fishtank Ensemble from California and their cross-pollinated gypsy music.

The LA Weekly calls them “cross pollinated gypsy music….one of the most thrilling young acts on the planet.” Formed in 2005 and playing everywhere from the hippest LA clubs to festivals, cultural centers, museums, parades, and even on the street, the band includes two explosive violins, the world’s best slap bass player, musical saw, flamenco and gypsy jazz guitar, trombone, opera, jazz and gypsy vocals, accordion and one little banjolele. Tackling everything from French hot jazz to wild Serbian and Transylvanian gypsy anthems, Flamenco, and oddball originals, the band is a not to be missed event for world music lovers…and everyone will love this intoxicating mix of music!!

It begins at the end: disillusioned liberal professor Miki climbs out of his own grave. The Americans have just begun their 1999 bombing campaign over Serbia and he’s come home to recriminate his father, in this scathing indictment of Balkan generation gaps and the deep wounds they inflict.

Cetrdesetogodisnji Miki, neostvareni pisac, racocarani docent na Katedri za Umetnost, obeshrabreni demokrata i “isutirani” (opusteni) kolumnista tiraznih dnevnih novina, izlazi iz vlastitog groba i ulazi u vlastiti zivot.

Ono sto nije uspeo godinama “za zivota” pokusava da obavi “za smrti” tokom samo 48 casova, ne bi li na neki nacin, “post mortem”, spasao obraz vlastite sredine i plemena, ne misleci pritom mnogo o svom.

Citav taj “posao” obavlja brzo, nespretno i prilicno umazan mastilom i krvlju, ali sa “cistom savescu” bica koje se posle citavog zivota oklevanja, kolebanja i sumnji opredelilo za akciju. Vraca se u vlastiti, udobni, mirni, topli i sigurni grob da provede vreme preostalo do kraja jednog pogresnog i opakog sveta.

We invite you to be a part of this wonderful experience, and expand your cultural horizons.  Immerse yourself in Greek culture, starting with its traditional food, sipping on Moschofilero or Retsina, whilst listening to rebetika. Then watch Greek movie, a true gem among the film buffs – comedy Never on Sunday.

Never on Sunday (Greek: Ποτέ Την Κυριακή, translit. Pote Tin Kyriaki) is a 1960 Greek black-and-white film which tells the story of Ilya (played by Melina Mercouri), a lady of the night, who lives in the port of Piraeus in Greece, and Homer (played by Jules Dassin), an American tourist — a classical scholar enamored with all things Greek. Her doxy, supposedly descended from the inventors of logic and harmony, is by far the most illogical, unharmonious individual he has ever run across. In addition, she may be the bubbling sweetheart of all the sailors and shipyard workers in Piraeus on weekdays, but on Sundays she’s a true and virtuous patron of the ancient Greek tragedies.

This movie gently submerges the viewer into Greek culture, including dance, music, and language (through the use of subtitles). The signature song and the bouzouki theme of the movie became hits of 1960s and brought Manos Hadjidakis, the composer, an Academy Award.

It won the Academy Award for Best Song (Manos Hadjidakis for “Never on Sunday”). It was nominated for the Academy Awards for, respectively, Best Actress in a Leading Role (Melina Mercouri), Best Costume Design, Black-and-White, Best Director (Jules Dassin) and Best Writing, Story and Screenplay – Written Directly for the Screen (Dassin). Mercouri won the award for Best Actress at the 1960 Cannes Film Festival.
