13 Tzameti is a 2005 film written and directed by Georgian filmmaker Géla Babluani. Tzameti is the Georgian word for thirteen. 13 Tzameti is the feature length directorial debut for Babluani. It also marks the acting debut of his younger brother Georges Babluani, who plays the film’s protagonist Sébastien.

A destitute immigrant worker steals an envelope containing instructions for a mysterious job that could pay out a fortune. Following the instructions, the young man unwittingly becomes trapped in a dark and dangerous situation.

The film won the World Cinema Jury Prize at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival. It also won two awards at the 62nd Venice Film Festival.

It begins at the end: disillusioned liberal professor Miki climbs out of his own grave. The Americans have just begun their 1999 bombing campaign over Serbia and he’s come home to recriminate his father, in this scathing indictment of Balkan generation gaps and the deep wounds they inflict.

Cetrdesetogodisnji Miki, neostvareni pisac, racocarani docent na Katedri za Umetnost, obeshrabreni demokrata i “isutirani” (opusteni) kolumnista tiraznih dnevnih novina, izlazi iz vlastitog groba i ulazi u vlastiti zivot.

Ono sto nije uspeo godinama “za zivota” pokusava da obavi “za smrti” tokom samo 48 casova, ne bi li na neki nacin, “post mortem”, spasao obraz vlastite sredine i plemena, ne misleci pritom mnogo o svom.

Citav taj “posao” obavlja brzo, nespretno i prilicno umazan mastilom i krvlju, ali sa “cistom savescu” bica koje se posle citavog zivota oklevanja, kolebanja i sumnji opredelilo za akciju. Vraca se u vlastiti, udobni, mirni, topli i sigurni grob da provede vreme preostalo do kraja jednog pogresnog i opakog sveta.

Eight years ago, pediatrician Alexandre Beck (François Cluzet) was the prime suspect in his wife’s murder. He’s put all that behind him, but now that two dead bodies have been found near his home, he’s suspected of wrongdoing once again. Čovek se budi posle dva meseca iz kome. Totalna amnezija. Ne seća se ničega što ima veze s njegovim dosadašnjim životom. Saznaje da je imao ženu. I sina. Ubijeni su kada je on ranjen. Pukovnik, koji tvrdi da mu je najbolji prijatelj, otkriva mu njegov identitet. On je major vojno-bezbednosne agencije. U njegov život se ubrzo upliće i inspektor koji tvrdi da poseduje informacije o smrti njegove porodice. Major izlazi iz bolnice. Pokušava da se vrati u normalan život. Suočava se s prazninom i beznađem. Jedina šansa da ponovo dođe do sopstvenog identiteta jeste da se upusti u igru koju mu nudi Inspektor. Pristaje… U međuvremenu sreće Teodoru, nekadašnju ljubavnicu, ne seća je se ali ona jedina u njemu prepoznaje novog čoveka.

Gloomy Sunday

“Gloomy Sunday,” an epic romance set in Budapest before, during, and after the Second World War. The title refers to a song, popularized in the US by Billie Holiday, which is rumored to have caused suicides in those who fell under its spell (Snopes.com, the ultimate arbiter of urban legends, lists this story as undetermined–good enough for a movie.)

“Gloomy Sunday” introduces us to the man who wrote the song, pianist Andras (Stefano Dionisi), the woman he wrote it for (Illona, played by Erika Maroszan), and the man who loved her first, the Jewish businessman Laszlo (Joachim Krol.) Laszlo’s restaurant, famous for its outstanding beef rolls, is the focus of the film and the central love triangle. It’s not quite Rick’s Café Americain, but everybody comes to Laszlo’s, including the German Hans Wieck (Ben Becker), who also falls for beautiful Hungarian Illona.

“Gloomy Sunday” won German awards for cinematography and direction, and it is easy to see why. The film is accomplished entertainment, well-acted and tastefully decorated.

“Love triangle plus Nazi” is an interesting constellation, and lead actress Erika Maroszan, who looks equally gorgeous in period dresses as she does in the countless naked scenes, is beautiful enough to make the trio of tragically smitten men convincing.

Bilal is 17 years old, a Kurdish boy from Iraq. He sets off on an adventure-filled journey across Europe. He wants to get to England to see his love who lives there. Bilal finally reaches Calais, but how do you cover 32 kilometers of the English Channel when you can’t swim? The boy soon discovers that his trip won’t be as easy as he imagined… The community of struggling illegal aliens in Calais is captured with authenticity, from the point of view of people who arrived there knowing nothing about France. This immigrant drama, with wonderful performances by the actors, is a strong story which uses documentary austerity and minimalist style to create a great emotional impact.
