Brazilian guitarist, singer, composer, percussionist

Luciano was born into a musical family on January 3, 1969 in rural Iretama, Parana, Brazil’s southern region. From this melodiously rich environment, he learned first how to sing with his mom, Luiza Maria. He further developed his vocal abilities through his maternal grandparents, who performed for local live radio shows and paternal grandparents, who harmonized beautifully. By age 14, he took the violão (acoustic guitar) as a self taught instrument, focusing his repertoire on Brazilian Folk and Bossa Nova (Brazilian Jazz). He continued his pursuit of technical development through the study of classical guitar at the age of 17, attending several guitar symposiums, work shops and master classes under one of Brazil’s most respected professors, Henrique Pinto. Luciano’s music journey next led him to the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) where he received a bachelor’s degree in music performance. While at UMKC full-time, he was invited to join Chicago Samba (a Chicago based Brazilian music group) and commuted weekly between Kansas City and Chicago to make ends meet. After successfully completing his education at UMKC, he relocated to Chicago where he has since established himself as a performing artist. Luciano has collaborated with many great fellow artists: playing acoustic guitar on John Goldman’s ‘For All the People’, vocals on Matt Geraghty’s ‘Mozaic’, arranging/co-producing, and performing on the recent release ‘Samba Mundo’ by St. Louis based Samba Bom, serving as lead vocalist and guitarist with the Evanston Orquestra de Samba which connects classical music with Brazilian rhythms and harmonies, and performing throughout the Chicago Jazz scene as a soloist. Other recent engagements include opening performances for Caetano Veloso, Vinicius Cantuaria, Virginia Rodrigues, performances for the Chicago Mayor’s Office of Special Events, The Democratic Convention of 2004, and several commercial releases throughout the Mid-west. Luciano also plays classical guitar for weddings, social events and private functions.

Guitar virtuoso Fareed Haque enjoys a career that spans the spectrum of musical styles. Moving easily between jazz and classical guitar, Fareed’s versatility has created a demand for him with prominent jazz and classical artists including Paquito D’Rivera, Dave Holland, Sting, Joe Henderson, Joe Zawinul, Javon Jackson, Cassandra Wilson, Kurt Elling, Lester Bowie, Arturo Sandoval, Robert Walter, Karl Denson, Medeski, Martin and Wood, Kahil el Zabar, Defunckt, Ramsey Lewis, Nigel Kennedy, Edgar Meyer, Robert Conant, Stephen Stubbs, Frank Bungarten, members of the Vermeer Quartet and many symphony orchestras in the U.S. and abroad. He has performed all of the major guitar concertos, is an active transcriber of baroque as well as South American music and has had numerous modern works dedicated to him.

Bilal is 17 years old, a Kurdish boy from Iraq. He sets off on an adventure-filled journey across Europe. He wants to get to England to see his love who lives there. Bilal finally reaches Calais, but how do you cover 32 kilometers of the English Channel when you can’t swim? The boy soon discovers that his trip won’t be as easy as he imagined… The community of struggling illegal aliens in Calais is captured with authenticity, from the point of view of people who arrived there knowing nothing about France. This immigrant drama, with wonderful performances by the actors, is a strong story which uses documentary austerity and minimalist style to create a great emotional impact.

Čekaj me, ja sigurno neću doći will premeire in the St. Sava Screening Room at Serbian Cultural Center St. Sava on Friday, February 12, at 8 PM. A second screening will take place on Sunday, February 14, at 6 PM. Admission is $10. The film will be in Serbian with English subtitles.

Parking at the Center is available for the first twenty automobiles.

We will honor Saint Sava with a traditional blessing of the slavski kolač, koljivo, and lighting of the slava candle. A program featuring the children of members will take place followed by a delicious Serbian dinner with all your favorite dishes. Vitomir Vita Ždrale will entertain us during dinner with his music.

Marketing Director

The Center is currently looking for someone with marketing experience to help us develop materials promoting the Center as the premier location for Serbian culture in the Chicagoland area. We are looking for a volunteer with 2–4 years of marketing experience who would be willing to work with us on a pro-bono basis.

Web Developer/Designer

The Center is looking for a volunteer who could assist our current web developers in maintaining and designing our web site. We are looking for someone who could work on a pro-bono basis, with a strong background in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP programming. WordPress knowledge is a must.

Event Organizer

We are looking for a volunteer who can plan and execute events at the Center on a regular basis. We are hoping to find someone who has 2-3 years of event planning experience who can also work on a pro-bono basis. Our main focus is to bring more cultural activities to the Center.

Children will be introduced to and participate in Serbian Orthodox Christmas traditions led by actors from the Serbian Theater “Mira Sremčević”, including being a polozajnik (the first person to enter a household on Christmas Day), burning the badnjak, and other customs which take place in Serbian homes on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

A lenten dinner will be served after the program.

This event is free and open to the public.

Enjoy an evening of stellar tamburaša music performed by Momčilo “Moma” Nikolić and Bane Djordjević.

A lavish Serbian dinner and a champagne toast at midnight are included with your reservation.

The music, while coming from the American and European jazz tradition including highly syncopated rhythms, modern jazz harmony, and improvisation, is also influenced by folk music from the Americas and Eastern Europe as well as modern alternative and indie rock bands from all over the world. Ulery’s music has also been described, at times, as cinematic and fanciful. ‘Loom’ is based out of Chicago, IL.
